Dysfluency (stuttering)

We provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment services for individuals who stutter. Our therapy sessions are designed to help clients improve their fluency and communication skills, while also addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of stuttering.

We use evidence-based treatment approaches, such as the Lidcombe Program and the Camperdown Program, to help clients achieve their communication goals. These approaches involve working with clients to identify their specific stuttering patterns and developing strategies to increase fluency and reduce disfluencies. We also work with clients to address any negative attitudes or beliefs they may have about their stuttering and to build their confidence and self-esteem.

We also understand the importance of family involvement in the therapy process. That’s why we provide education and training to help parents and caregivers support their loved ones’ progress outside of therapy sessions. We work closely with clients and their families to ensure that therapy goals are aligned with their communication needs and functional goals.

Benefits of Dysfluency (stuttering) Therapy

Improved Speech Fluency

Dysfluency therapy focuses on improving speech fluency in individuals who stutter. Therapists work on techniques to reduce disfluencies, enhance speech rhythm and timing, and promote smooth and effortless speech production, leading to improved overall fluency.

Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem

As individuals make progress in Dysfluency therapy and gain control over their speech, their confidence and self-esteem often increase. The ability to communicate more fluently and express themselves without interruptions or struggles empowers them to engage in social interactions, public speaking, and other communication situations with greater confidence and assertiveness.

Enhanced Quality of Life

Dysfluency therapy equips individuals with strategies and techniques to manage stuttering moments and communicate more effectively. Therapists help individuals learn techniques such as controlled breathing, slowing down speech rate, using pausing techniques, and desensitization to challenging speaking situations, enabling them to navigate communication difficulties with greater ease.

Reduction of Secondary Behaviours

Dysfluency therapy addresses not only the core stuttering behaviours but also associated secondary behaviours such as facial grimacing, eye blinking, or tension in other parts of the body. By targeting these behaviours, therapy helps individuals reduce or eliminate these secondary behaviours, promoting smoother and more natural speech production.

Improved Communication Confidence

Dysfluency therapy aims to enhance overall communication confidence in individuals who stutter. Therapists provide support and guidance to help individuals develop a positive attitude towards their communication abilities, manage anxiety related to stuttering, and embrace their unique communication style. This leads to increased communication participation and engagement in various social and professional settings.

Enhanced Quality of Life

Dysfluency therapy has a significant impact on the overall quality of life for individuals who stutter. By improving speech fluency, confidence, communication strategies, and emotional well-being, therapy enables individuals to fully participate in social activities, pursue personal and professional goals, and experience a greater sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in their daily lives.
